Ivan Sarmiento is a Colombian Geographer with a Master’s of Public Health and extensive hands-on experience in intercultural dialogue with indigenous communities. He had the opportunity to listen to the Indigenous Elders' traditional knowledge which changed his life and provided him with a new perspective to understand health and its relation to culture and environment. His interdisciplinary work blends academic research with community-based action. Most of his work takes place in Colombia, but he has been part of international projects in Canada, México, Ecuador, and Nigeria. Mr. Sarmiento was invited in 2016 to undertake a Ph.D. in family medicine at McGill University to expand the knowledge in the field of intercultural dialogue and traditional health systems. The scholarships that have funded all his education recognize an outstanding academic performance.
